International Business Machines Corp. IBM -0.44% agreed to acquire Emptoris Inc., as the tech giant continues to place an emphasis on Web-based software company purchases.
IBM has transformed its business in recent years thanks to a slew of acquisitions of software and services companies. Its latest deal gives it access to Emptoris’s cloud and on-premise analytics software, which focuses on procurement and supply-chain management. Financial terms of the acquisition weren’t disclosed.
Last week, IBM said it agreed to buy DemandTec Inc. (DMAN), which provides Web-based software to help retailers analyze how much to charge for their wares, and Curam Software Ltd., to expand its initiative to make cities and governments more efficient.
Emptoris, based in Burlington, Mass., has more than 350 customers globally from industries including consumer products, financial services and health care. It has over 725 employees and was founded in 1999. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2012.

The acquisition is the latest addition to IBM’s “smarter commerce” initiative focused on retailers, launched in March 2011, as the company looks to tap into a market opportunity that it said could be $20 billion or higher by 2015.
