November 15, 2019

Bollenini has focussed on driving operational optimisations, enabling world-class healthcare.

WAspiring to change the healthcare model of the country, Abhinay Bollenini, CEO of Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS Hospitals) is a proud winner of BW 40 Under 40. A leading multi-disciplinary provider of healthcare services in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, KIMS Hospitals is the only company in India to build a sustainable model around tier 2 and tier 3 cities which accounts for a significant workload in the healthcare system. Bollenini at the helm of the leading hospital chain is a medical practitioner by heart who envisions to take the leading chain to heights.

He joined KIMS in Jan 2013 and was previously the Vice-President Business Development. Also known as B Abhinay, he completed his MBBS from the Deccan Medical College, Hyderabad in 2010. He was the lone qualified medical practitioner from India to be selected by the office of Hillary Clinton in 2011, to travel across the United States of America and understand healthcare and cancer care in particular.

He designed and executed KIMS Hospitals’ organic and inorganic growth initiatives, including setting up a 200-bed medical facility in Kondapur, and partnerships with hospitals in Vizag, Anantapur and Ongole in the city of Andhra Pradesh. Since Bollenini has started leading the growth initiatives of KIMS Hospital network, it has added 1,100 beds to reach a 3,004-bed system to become one of the top five hospital networks across India. It has also grown revenues from Rs 600 crore to Rs 1,000 crore under his leadership. Further, Bollenini has focused on driving operational optimisations, enabling the company to provide world-class healthcare services at affordable prices – an unmatched and much-needed value offering for the country.

Bollenini believes that Modicare, the central government scheme, has taken care of the affordability challenge of the sector but if healthcare is not accessible in these markets one may not realise the complete social impact of Modicare. “For the last couple of years, they have been adding capacity in tier 2 and tier 3 location and are also able to sustain the operations because of innovative operational strategies,” adds Bollenini.

Considering the fact that the number of beds per 1,000 population in India is around 0.7 beds whereas the world average is around 3.5 beds for 1,000 population. “However, through Modicare and technology, primary and secondary care services are largely getting addressed,” informed the young CEO. Discussing the current economic slowdown, he adds, “Healthcare at this point in time is not prone to such macroeconomic slowdown.”

While talking about the growth plans, Bollenini informed, “My father and a lot of senior clinicians who I have been working with for the last couple of years have been the driving force. We will scale our operations to be among the top three hospital chains of the country. We have worked on a model and scaled it across different cities. This could change the way things are delivered in the healthcare industry in tier 2 and 3 markets. This could also address significant problems of accessibility and delivering low-cost healthcare which could have an exponential impact on the GDP and the social good of the country.

Bollineni believes commitment and persistence can take you to your dream irrespective from where you start. He adds, “We should create an ecosystem that allows risk-taking capability. Most entrepreneurs are the ones born with fire and very little financial support. Unless we create an ecosystem that allows them to take that risk, we will not be able to generate more young entrepreneurs in society.
