Chief Minister Announces Comprehensive Safety Program
Bhubaneswar witnesses a groundbreaking moment in road safety as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announces the ambitious Zero Accident Day initiative. This comprehensive program, backed by investments worth Rs 575.77 crore, marks Odisha’s commitment to revolutionizing transportation safety across the state.
Economic Impact of Road Accidents
During the launch event at Lok Seva Bhavan, CM Majhi emphasized the far-reaching consequences of road accidents beyond individual tragedies. “About 75% of accident-related deaths in India are due to speeding,” he stated, highlighting the urgent need for stricter adherence to traffic safety rules.
The Chief Minister stressed that road accidents don’t just affect families or states but impact the entire economy. “Accidents impact not just families or states, but the entire economy. It is not just an individual loss, but a collective one,” Majhi explained, urging citizens to maintain vigilance from departure to destination.
Automated Driving Testing Systems Transform Safety
A major milestone in road safety infrastructure was achieved with the inauguration of 11 automated driving testing systems (ADTS) across various districts. This Rs 24 crore investment represents a technological leap forward in ensuring driver competency and accident prevention.
The state’s first automated vehicle testing centre was unveiled in Cuttack, with ambitious plans to establish 20 additional centres using an allocated budget of Rs 211 crore. This expansion will significantly enhance driving standards and reduce human error on Odisha’s roads.
Disha Project: Advanced Highway Enforcement
The second phase of the Disha project (Driving Electronic Enforcement to Save Human Lives) received a boost with Rs 215 crore in funding. This comprehensive highway safety program will monitor 485 kilometers of national and state highways, utilizing cutting-edge technology for traffic enforcement.
The Disha initiative represents a paradigm shift in road safety management, combining electronic surveillance with real-time monitoring to prevent accidents and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
Shri Jagannath Express: Premium Transportation
Transportation convenience received a significant upgrade with the introduction of 15 super premium buses named ‘Shri Jagannath Express’. These Rs 27.3 crore vehicles will enhance connectivity between major cities including Puri, Ayodhya, Tirupati, and Hyderabad.
The premium bus service addresses growing demand for comfortable, safe long-distance travel while maintaining strict safety standards throughout their operations.
Infrastructure Development Milestones
The government inaugurated the Atal Bus Stand in three strategic locations: Basudevpur, Dhamra, and Basta. These facilities will improve public transportation accessibility and provide enhanced passenger amenities.
Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena emphasized the connection between development and safety: “When we discuss Odisha’s development, safe and robust transport is crucial.” This statement underscores the state’s holistic approach to transportation infrastructure.
Community Recognition and Awareness
The event featured participation from Zero Accident Day brand ambassadors, including Digapahandi MLA Siddhanta Mahapatra and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik, who shared vital road safety awareness messages with attendees.
Five exemplary individuals—Abinash Panigrahi, Bishwaranjan Padhi, Panchanan Das, Srinivas Behera, and Savita Rani Parida—received recognition for their heroic efforts in transporting accident victims to hospitals, demonstrating community commitment to emergency response.
IIT-Madras Collaboration Extends Initiative
The Zero Accident Day initiative, developed in collaboration with IIT-Madras, will continue its comprehensive approach until June 28. This academic partnership ensures evidence-based strategies and continuous improvement in road safety protocols.
The initiative’s scientific foundation, combined with practical implementation, positions Odisha as a leader in accident prevention and transportation safety across India.
Future Impact and Vision
Odisha’s comprehensive road safety transformation through the Zero Accident Day initiative sets new standards for traffic management and accident prevention. The substantial investment in automated testing systems, highway enforcement, and premium transportation demonstrates unprecedented commitment to citizen safety.
This multi-faceted approach combining technology, infrastructure, and community engagement creates a robust framework for achieving the ambitious goal of zero accidents on Odisha’s roads, making travel safer for millions of citizens and visitors.
