The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) has taken a significant step toward reducing road fatalities by identifying 12 high-risk accident zones across the city. In collaboration with road safety experts Rahul Verma and Navdeep Asija, the MC has published a comprehensive booklet titled “Road Accident Black-spot Improvement Plan for Ludhiana Municipal Corporation Roads,” which was officially released by the administration on Monday.
12 Critical Accident Hotspots Identified
The detailed analysis highlights 12 dangerous locations where accidents occur at an alarming rate:

- Bobby Palace to Shingar Cinema stretch
- Sethi Ice Cream T-Point on Metro Road
- Punjab National Bank junction
- Itta Wala Chowk
- Vishwakarma Chowk
- Durga Mata Mandir vicinity
- Jagraon Bridge
- Jai Mata Chintpurni dhaba to Bharat petrol pump stretch
- State Bank of India to Pavilion Mall road
- Police Line Deep Nagar
- Sabji Mandi Chowk
According to the experts who compiled the data, these zones represent not just traffic congestion points but deadly accident hotspots requiring immediate intervention.
Declining Fatality Rate Shows Progress
Official statistics indicate promising results from recent safety initiatives. Road accident fatalities in Ludhiana have decreased from 403 in 2023 to 377 in 2024, a reduction attributed to enhanced enforcement measures and coordinated administrative efforts.
During the booklet’s release event at Circuit House, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora emphasized the urgency of addressing these danger zones: “The city’s black spots demand immediate attention. Lives are at stake, and we cannot afford to delay interventions in these zones. With multi-agency coordination, we’re moving towards long-term, sustainable traffic safety solutions.”
Strategic Traffic Management Improvements
The local administration has implemented several practical measures to improve road safety:
- Deployment of 140 new traffic police personnel, particularly near educational institutions during peak hours
- Construction of a foot overbridge near the bus stand to protect pedestrians
- Permanent implementation of two-way movement on the elevated road from Hero Bakery Chowk to Pakhowal Road following successful trials
These initiatives form part of a broader strategy developed with technical support from the Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre in SAS Nagar.
Data-Driven Approach to Urban Mobility
The booklet represents a shift toward evidence-based traffic planning in Ludhiana. By identifying specific trouble spots through accident data analysis, authorities can target resources where they’ll have maximum impact.
Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma and MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal, who participated in the press conference alongside Punjab Road Safety Council members, are coordinating efforts to transform these high-risk areas with infrastructure improvements and stricter enforcement protocols.
This comprehensive approach combines physical modifications to dangerous road sections with enhanced traffic management and public awareness campaigns, creating a multi-layered strategy to protect Ludhiana’s residents and visitors.
