Transforming India’s Mobility Safety Landscape
Bengaluru, Karnataka, April 30, 2025 – Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is transforming India’s road safety landscape through comprehensive initiatives that combine education, innovation, and infrastructure development. With a steadfast commitment to building a safer mobility ecosystem, TKM has successfully impacted over 1 million individuals nationwide through structured programs targeting vulnerable road users, particularly school children. As road accidents remain a significant public health concern in India, Toyota’s multi-dimensional approach offers a blueprint for sustainable safety improvement that balances awareness, behavioral change, and technological advancement.
Pioneering Road Safety Education Nationwide
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to creating a safer mobility ecosystem in India. The company’s structured initiatives span awareness, education, and innovative solutions that collectively address the critical challenge of road safety.
At the core of these efforts lies the Toyota Safety Education Program (TSEP), launched in 2007 with the powerful theme “Road Safety – My Right, My Responsibility.” This flagship initiative specifically targets students from 5th to 9th standard in both government and private schools, employing a proven ABC approach—Awareness, Behavioural Change, and Campaigns.
The program’s impact speaks volumes:
- 929,288 students reached to date
- 1,643 trained educators actively involved
- 140 schools participating since FY23
- Significant measurable increase in road safety awareness among participants
Strategic Implementation Model Ensures Lasting Impact
TSEP follows a carefully designed three-year intervention model:
- Phase 1: Implementation in Bangalore (FY 2023-26)
- Phase 2: Concurrent deployment across Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai (FY 2024-25)
What makes TSEP particularly effective is its child-to-community approach. Each student becomes a road safety ambassador, creating a powerful ripple effect that transforms community attitudes toward responsible road usage. The program maintains momentum through:
- Annual engagement activities
- Curriculum integration for sustained impact
- Active teacher and school participation
- Dynamic learning methods including skits, poster-making, and Road Safety Clubs
Youth Innovation Driving Future Safety Solutions
Complementing educational efforts is the Toyota Hackathon, which nurtures problem-solving skills among students from 7th to 12th grade. This platform has:
- Engaged 77,200 students nationwide
- Generated over 350 innovative road safety concepts
- Covered critical areas including school zone safety, IoT integration, and traffic management
- Transformed participants into “Change Agents” influencing broader policy thinking
The hackathon guides students through a comprehensive five-phase journey from ideation to incubation, with expert mentorship supporting the development of implementable prototypes.
Infrastructure Enhancement and Commercial Driver Support
To create practical learning environments, TKM has established seven Traffic Parks where children experience road safety rules firsthand in simulated settings.
Understanding the crucial role of commercial drivers, Toyota’s Road Safety and Health Initiative in Mizoram has:
- Benefited 800 drivers through structured awareness sessions
- Conducted health check-ups in collaboration with local authorities
- Addressed road discipline, vehicle maintenance, and mental wellbeing
- Impacted a total of 7,822 individuals cumulatively
Technology-Driven Monitoring Solutions
Toyota has strengthened traffic monitoring infrastructure by installing:
- 34 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems
- 20 CCTV cameras at key junctions across Mizoram
These technological interventions benefit over 400,000 road users while significantly reducing violations and encouraging compliance.
