State Allocates Rs 2 Crore for Rural Youth Development
Panaji: The Goa government has demonstrated its commitment to factory worker safety and rural youth development by allocating Rs 2 crore for an innovative Skill-on-Wheels program. This initiative aims to bring industrial safety training directly to young people in rural areas of the state.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant explained, “We have launched the Skill-on-Wheels program, a mobile training unit equipped with tools, technology, and learning materials. It will travel from Panaji to rural regions throughout Goa, providing hands-on training to youth. Through this program, we are creating skilling, reskilling, and upskilling opportunities for young people across every sector.”
Sawant made these remarks while speaking at the Occupational Safety and Health Expo and Summit 2025, organized by the inspectorate of factories and boilers.
Focus on Comprehensive Safety Education
The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s intention to incorporate safety training in educational institutions, with particular attention to industrial fires, electrical safety, disaster management, and mental well-being.
“Goa is prioritizing employee health and safety across all industries. Our department aims to promote awareness, knowledge, and practical action toward workplace safety. The increasing number of industrial and road accidents is concerning,” Sawant stated.
Industry Collaboration for Workplace Safety
Factories and Boilers Minister Nilkant Halarnkar highlighted the government’s goal of creating opportunities for industries to interact and learn best safety practices for implementation in workplaces.
“Technology has the potential to make our work environments safer. A well-trained local workforce will reduce dependence on external recruitment while creating more opportunities for local talent, particularly students from technical institutions,” Halarnkar said.
He added, “To achieve a more prosperous Goa, we must attract more industries to our state. This requires the right knowledge, appropriate policies, and proper guidance.”
Building Local Talent for Industrial Growth
The Skill-on-Wheels initiative represents a significant step in Goa’s workforce development strategy. By bringing training directly to rural communities, the government aims to create a skilled local workforce ready to meet the needs of current and future industries in the state.
This mobile approach addresses transportation barriers that often prevent rural youth from accessing training opportunities in urban centers. The program’s focus on industrial safety also aligns with the government’s broader goals of reducing workplace accidents and creating safer industrial environments throughout Goa.
The Rs 2 crore allocation demonstrates the state’s serious commitment to this innovative approach to skill development and workplace safety.
