Safety Audit Recommendations Fully Adopted
The Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh has successfully implemented all 21 road safety measures recommended by an expert team from IIT-Delhi. According to the State Road Safety Council’s annual report, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has achieved full compliance with these safety standards.
Comprehensive Safety Audit
In August 2018, YEIDA commissioned IIT-Delhi to conduct a thorough road safety audit of the 165-km expressway that spans six districts: Gautam Budh Nagar, Aligarh, Mathura, Hathras, Agra, and Bulandshahr. Following this comprehensive assessment, IIT-Delhi submitted a detailed safety report in 2019 that outlined key recommendations to enhance road security.
Key Safety Implementations
YEIDA has successfully implemented all eight primary safety measures recommended by IIT-Delhi, along with 13 additional safety standards. These implementations include:
- Installation of additional signboards before exit ramps
- Removal of unnecessary lane markings
- Addition of rumble strips at entry and exit points
- Setup of crash attenuators to reduce noise impact on exit ramps
- Installation of audible shoulder markings throughout the corridor
- Removal of all signposts from road shoulders
- Reinstallation of shoulder guardrails as per safety standards
- Replacement of central dividers with flush medians and central guardrails
Enhanced Emergency Response System
To strengthen emergency response capabilities, the expressway is now equipped with:
- Three Quick Response Team (QRT) vehicles
- Eleven patrolling vehicles
- Six ambulances
- Five fire trucks
- Nine cranes
- Two JCBs
Additionally, three trauma centers have been established near the expressway to provide immediate medical assistance to accident victims.
Digital Support and Enforcement
For quick support during emergencies, authorities have introduced:
- ‘Yamuna Saathi’ mobile app
- Toll-free helpline for immediate assistance
- Strict enforcement measures including breath tests for drivers
- E-challans for helmet and seatbelt violations
- Penalties for overspeeding
Furthermore, awareness campaigns and speed limit signboards have been implemented along the expressway to inform drivers and reduce accidents.
Transportation Corridor Improvement
The Yamuna Expressway serves as a vital transportation route in Uttar Pradesh. The implementation of these safety measures represents a significant commitment to improving road safety for all travelers using this important corridor.
