Revolutionary Road Network Expansion
Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari announced an ambitious vision for India’s road infrastructure on Tuesday (March 25, 2025). Speaking at the Times Drive Auto Summit and Awards 2025, Gadkari made the remarkable claim that Indian highways will surpass American roads in quality within two years.
“I don’t think there is any problem in the road sector. The changes this year and next year will be so significant that earlier I used to say our highway road network would match that of the US, but now I say that within two years, our highway network will be even better than the U.S.,” Gadkari declared confidently.
The Minister’s statement reflects the accelerated pace of infrastructure development currently underway across the country, with significant investments being channeled into road construction and improvement projects.
Ambitious Targets For Infrastructure
During his address, Gadkari revealed his department has set an impressive target to construct 60 kilometers of road network daily. This aggressive expansion plan aims to dramatically reduce travel times between major urban centers including Delhi, Dehradun, Jaipur, and Bengaluru.
The rapid development of high-quality highways is expected to boost economic growth by improving connectivity, reducing logistics costs, and enhancing the overall efficiency of transportation across the country.
Electric Vehicle Revolution
Beyond road infrastructure, Gadkari expressed strong confidence in India’s electric vehicle sector. He boldly predicted that India will overtake the United States in both EV adoption and manufacturing within the next five years.
When questioned about Tesla’s potential entry into the Indian market, Gadkari maintained a stance favoring open competition: “It is an open market; whoever has the power, come and make it and compete in the prices.”
The Minister emphasized that Indian transport manufacturers prioritize quality over cost, suggesting that domestic automakers are well-positioned to compete with international brands entering the market.
Lowering Logistics Costs
A key focus of Gadkari’s infrastructure vision involves reducing India’s logistics costs, which currently stand between 14-16 percent. The Minister committed to bringing these costs down to single digits, a move that would significantly enhance India’s global competitiveness.
“Our manufacturers will make good vehicles and offer them at competitive prices,” Gadkari stated, highlighting how improved infrastructure and reduced logistics expenses will benefit multiple sectors of the economy.
The ambitious roadmap outlined by Minister Gadkari represents one of the most aggressive infrastructure development plans in India’s history, with potential far-reaching implications for economic growth, transportation efficiency, and the country’s position in global manufacturing.
