INDIA’S ALARMING ROAD SAFETY CRISIS
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari delivered a sobering assessment at the Times Drive Auto Summit & Awards 2025, revealing that India loses more lives to road accidents than to riots or pandemics. With 4.90 lakh annual road accidents claiming over 1 lakh lives, the crisis demands immediate attention.
SHOCKING STATISTICS REVEAL NATIONAL EMERGENCY
Government data paints a grim picture of India’s road safety situation. Each year, approximately 1.78 lakh people die in road accidents, with 60% of victims being young adults aged 18-34. Uttar Pradesh leads with 23,000 deaths, followed by Tamil Nadu (18,000), Maharashtra (15,000), and Madhya Pradesh (13,000). In urban centers, Delhi reports the highest fatalities at 1,400, with Bengaluru (915) and Jaipur (850) following.
BEHAVIORAL CHALLENGES HINDER SAFETY EFFORTS
Despite implementing numerous road safety measures, Gadkari expressed frustration over the widespread disregard for traffic laws. He specifically highlighted dangerous behaviors like riding two-wheelers without helmets and ignoring traffic signals, emphasizing that this lack of respect for regulations costs countless lives.
ELECTRIC VEHICLES TRANSFORMING TRANSPORTATION
Looking toward solutions, Gadkari noted that EV adoption is outpacing traditional vehicle sales. “The future of transportation in India is green. The cost of electric vehicles and petrol or diesel vehicles will be more or less the same in the next six months,” he predicted, pointing to rapid advancements in EV technology and infrastructure.
SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVES GAINING MOMENTUM
India currently can manufacture 50,000 electric buses but needs 1-1.5 lakh to meet transportation demands. Gadkari emphasized ethanol’s important role in transitioning to alternative fuels and discussed reducing the country’s annual import of 90 lakh tons of bitumen by 15 lakh tons, benefiting both the environment and economy.
COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH NEEDED
As road accidents continue claiming precious lives, Gadkari’s comments underline the urgent need for stricter traffic law enforcement alongside accelerated adoption of green technologies. The government’s push for safer, sustainable transportation has never been more critical in addressing India’s dual challenges of road safety and environmental protection.
