Critical Safety Improvements Target Black Spots
In a landmark announcement to Parliament, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed comprehensive efforts to enhance highway safety across India. The initiative has identified 13,795 black spots on National Highways (NHs), with authorities implementing immediate corrective measures at 9,525 locations and completing permanent improvements at 4,777 sites.
Immediate Safety Measures Implemented
The government’s rapid response includes strategic deployment of essential safety features. These improvements encompass enhanced road markings, strategic signage placement, installation of crash barriers, implementation of road studs, and targeted traffic calming interventions.
Long-Term Infrastructure Enhancement Strategy
To ensure lasting safety improvements, authorities have initiated comprehensive infrastructure upgrades. These include significant modifications to road geometry, junction improvements, strategic carriageway widening, and construction of essential underpasses and overpasses.
Remarkable Progress in Highway Development
Since 2014, India’s highway infrastructure has undergone unprecedented expansion. The development encompasses an impressive 101,900 kilometers of National Highways, constructed between April 2014 and December 2024, marking a 130% increase in annual construction rates compared to the previous decade.
Bharatmala Pariyojana: Transforming Road Infrastructure
The ambitious Bharatmala Pariyojana initiative, launched in 2017, continues to reshape India’s road infrastructure landscape. The program has successfully awarded projects covering 26,425 kilometers out of its planned 34,800-kilometer network. Currently, 19,201 kilometers, including modern expressways, stand completed, with full project completion anticipated by FY 2027-28.
