A New Jersey hospital is launching a remote patient monitoring program for patients discharged after undergoing a C-section or hysterectomy.
St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick is partnering with Pennington, NJ-based VOX Telehealth to launch the new service as part of its Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program. They’ll start with the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, but expand to expand that platform.
The program connects with patients in the home to provide preoperative education and coordination of pre-screening assessments, then monitors those patients through surgery and when they return home, with a notification and alert system to keep caregivers in the loop. It also includes a tracking system for prescribed medications that aims to coordinate doses with pain score and reduce medication use over time.

“We recognize that providing appropriate education, coordination and real-time connectivity throughout a patient’s treatment is imperative,” Attila Kett, MD, chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, said in a press release. “Additionally, integrating these unique opioid-sparing tools allows our physicians to focus on reducing the use of narcotics for pain management following surgery; providing better long-term outcomes for our patients.”
The hospital is the latest in a growing number of health systems turning to RPM to extend care to patients outside the four walls of the hospital. Programs that that employed at St. Peter’s aim to improve clinical outcomes and reduce unnecessary expenses (including extended hospital stays, adverse outcomes and rehospitalizations) by better preparing the patient before surgery and extending care to the home after surgery.
