At the annual Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy national meeting in Denver, Colorado; the Gateway Health Pharmacy team was awarded bronze medal for their excellent research. The Senior Pharmacists Dr. Deanna Rowe and Dr. Francine Snyder earned the award for their abstract entitled as ‘Assessment of Healthcare Provider Training, Awareness, and Management Practices for Chronic Opioid Therapy’.

Research on opioid!
The research that got awarded was conducted by Dr. Rowe and Dr. Snyder. The research was conducted in order to assess the increase in the quantum of opioid related overdoses and death. It was done so as to find out that how this effect actually interacts with the apprehension that is associated with prescribing opioids. Further after evaluating providers’ training and also the awareness of chronic opioid therapy, universal precautions and even abuse, the study identified gaps in provider educations.
The research used survey results that were obtain from providers, showed that 87% of them have recognized and considered opioid abuse as priority for their practice. The end result of this research concluded that additional education is actually necessary in order to increase provider’s comfort level with regards to patients on chronic opioid therapy.
Pigg said,
“The results of this study will allow Gateway Health to offer enhanced educational opportunities and resources so providers can improve management of patient care when writing prescriptions to treat chronic pain and the use of long-term opioid therapy.”
