As of July 31, CMS had paid out $31.3 billion in electronic health record incentive payments to eligible hospitals and professionals participating in the meaningful use program, according to the latest CMS data, FierceEMR reports.
Under the 2009 economic stimulus package, providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHRs can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments (Durben Hirsch,FierceEMR, 8/25).
Payment Details
The $31.3 billion in incentive payments includes:
- $20.9 billion paid through Medicare; and
- $9.98 billion paid through Medicaid (CMS website, August 2015).

According to the data, 543,524 active participants had signed up for the EHR incentive program through July, including:
- 355,290 eligible professionals in the Medicare program;
- 183,413 eligible professionals in the Medicaid program; and
- 4,821 eligible hospitals.
Of those eligible hospitals:
- 238 have registered to participate in Medicare only;
- 165 have registered to participate in Medicaid only; and
- 4,418 have registered to participate in both Medicare and Medicaid (CMS data, July 2015).
Meanwhile, the data show:
- 306,825 eligible professionals and 4,430 eligible hospitals have attested to Stage 1; and
- 56,658 eligible professionals and 1,532 eligible hospitals have attested to Stage 2 (FierceEMR, 8/25).
