The U.S. Department Health and Human Services gave Georgia $13.8 million in grants to support the state’s maternal, infant and early childhood home visiting program, HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwellannounced Jan. 19.
The funds will be used to continue to expand voluntary, evidence-based home visiting services for women during pregnancy and parents with small children.
The program serves about one-third of the counties in the country with high rates of low birth weight, teen pregnancies, living in poverty and infant mortality. More than 1.4 million home visits have been conducted through the program, which served 115,000 parents and children in 2014.
HHS awarded $386 million total to states, territories and nonprofit organizations to support the program.
