Many hospital CEOs continue to see hefty increases in pay, according to Modern Healthcare, an online source of business news and events in the medical-industrial complex.
According to a recent report, “total cash compensation grew an average of 24.2 percent from 2011 to 2012 for the 147 chief executives included in Modern Healthcare’s analysis of the most recent public information available for not-for-profit compensation.” The report said that 21 of the 147 CEOs saw total cash compensation rise by more than 50 percent.
The article pointed out that non-profit hospitals have a strong charitable mission, and that the salaries for CEOs of charities are in the low six-figures. The article also pointed out that the average worker gets a 2 percent raise.
As for local hospital CEOs, here are the figures from the most recent IRS Form 990, presented in alphabetical order. Even though the form is standard, the organizations didn’t report the same way:

Dr. Bradford Berk, CEO of UR Medicine (2012 filing): Total compensation: $1,131,588 (includes base, other, deferred, non-taxable benefits.
Mark Clement, president and CEO of the former Rochester General Health System (2012 filing): $1,385,174 reportable from related organizations; $712,572 estimated amount of other compensation from organization and related organizations.
Warren Hern, president and CEO of the former Unity Health System (2012 filing): $811,443 reportable from related organizations; $74,259 estimated amount of other compensation from organization and related organizations.
Rochester General and Unity Health systems merged in July. A new CEO is expected to be hired by the end of 2014. Any compensation figures for the new person aren’t likely to be available until 2016.
