Electronic medical and health records make it easier for healthcare facilities and independent physicians to quickly access a patient’s medical history. For example, if your doctor needs to confirm the results of your most recent lab work or check the details of your most recent hospital stay, he or she can view it online immediately. Your physician or other healthcare provider can view this data entered into your electronic medical record (EMR) by logging into a secure system from any device that has internet access.
When you are in the hospital, your EMR travels with you from the time you are admitted through testing and your stay on the unit, but unlike a paper chart, it doesn’t have to be carried or attached to your bed or wheelchair. Your information is always ready and waiting for your providers when you arrive at your destination. The goal of electronic medical and health records is to make this sort of seamless transition occur between all healthcare facilities and private offices. If you get a new healthcare provider, your medical record will follow you directly to that office. Should you get sick or injured while you are away from your home, your health information can be accessed, even if your temporary providers can’t get a hold of your doctor.
